Selecting the right contractor is key to creating your dream backyard oasis. Here’s what to keep in mind:
A word on price: While budget is a natural consideration, focusing solely on the lowest bid can be a costly mistake in the long run. Quality materials, experienced labor, and reliable equipment ensure a beautiful and functional outdoor space for years to come. Investing wisely upfront saves you headaches and expenses down the road. Remember the saying: you often get exactly what you pay for. Prioritize long-term value and satisfaction over short-term savings.

Your property dimensions are the first piece of the puzzle in determining the ideal size, shape, and placement of your pool and/or spa. Importantly for our East Valley homeowners, all cities have specific regulations regarding setback requirements a pool or spa must be from your home and property lines for structural integrity and safety. Good news: Apricity Pools is well-versed in all local zoning requirements and will ensure your design adheres to these guidelines, maximizing your space while staying compliant.
Think about how you primarily envision using your pool. Is it for energetic family fun, a tranquil spot for exercise, a hub for entertaining guests, or a combination? Understanding your lifestyle helps us recommend the best pool type for you. Here are some popular options:
See the Pool sizing chart below for side by side comparisons. These are standard measurements only but may give you a sense what your property will facilitate. If you can imagine it, Apricity Pools can create a pool of any size and depth desired.

If space isn’t a constraint, Apricity Pools can bring virtually any free-form shape to life! Consider how the pool’s shape will complement your home’s architecture and landscaping. Our design experts excel at creating a harmonious flow between your home, pool, and outdoor environment. Here are some common pool shapes:
You certainly have a choice. Unless you have a strong viewpoint towards one versus the other, at Apricity Pools we recommend saltwater pools and this is what most of our customers opt for. Allow us to educate you on how both operate.
The truth is, all pools use chlorine. Saltwater pools and chlorine pools both sanitize pool water, but they differ in how they achieve that. Saltwater pools use an electrolysis process to generate chlorine from salt, while chlorine pools use traditional chlorine products. Saltwater pools are often preferred for their gentler water, lower maintenance costs, and lack of chlorine smell. However, they require a higher initial investment and specialized equipment. Chlorine pools are more cost-effective upfront but require ongoing chemical management.
Pros of Saltwater Pools:
Cons of Saltwater Pools:
Pros of Chlorine Pools:
Lower Initial Cost: Chlorine pools are generally less expensive to install initially, especially for smaller pools.
Quick Sanitization: Chlorine provides quick and effective sanitization of pool water.
Cons of Chlorine Pools:
Ongoing Chemical Management: Chlorine pools require regular testing and balancing of chemical levels.
Potential Irritation: High chlorine levels can irritate skin and eyes, especially for sensitive individuals.
Chlorine Smell: The distinct chlorine smell can be a drawback for some pool owners.
Storage and Handling: Chlorine chemicals require careful storage and handling to ensure safety.
We understand that a pool and spa are significant investments. Establishing your budget parameters (whether a firm “not-to-exceed” figure or your pre-approved financing amount) is a crucial first step for us to provide realistic and creative solutions. While we strive to accommodate various budgets, remember our caution offered in previous FAQs, prioritizing the absolute lowest bid can sometimes compromise the quality of materials, labor, and equipment, potentially leading to costly issues down the line. We believe in delivering long-term value and a pool that you’ll enjoy for years to come. We also have lenders available, specializing in pool and outdoor space improvements, to support your financing needs. Most are surprised to learn that they can enjoy a resort-style backyard every day at the same cost as an automotive loan.
Your Dream Pool, Built with Precision and Speed!
Wondering about the timeline for your new pool? For most projects, where the ground is cooperative and heavy machinery isn’t extensively required, you can anticipate enjoying your custom pool in approximately 60 days. Even when unique challenges emerge and are skillfully navigated, our experienced team is adept at keeping projects on track, with completion typically achieved within 90 days. Our commitment at Apricity Pools is to provide unparalleled focus to each and every project. By intentionally managing our client volume, we guarantee your pool build receives the priority and attention it demands, ensuring a smooth and seamless experience from start to finish – something often compromised by larger companies managing numerous projects simultaneously.
This is a common scenario! In most cases, we can navigate existing perimeter fencing by simply removing a gate. For larger equipment needed for excavation, we might temporarily need to remove a section of the fence. Rest assured, Apricity Pools has successfully completed numerous projects with limited access (down to 48 inches for small to medium pools!). The main exceptions are very large pools requiring heavier machinery or challenging soil conditions. If temporary fence removal is necessary, the cost of reinstallation will be clearly included in your proposal.
That’s a great question, and we understand your concern for your existing landscaping and driveway. Access to your backyard with excavation equipment is a necessary part of the pool building process. Rest assured, we take great care in planning our access route to your backyard. Our priority is to identify the path that minimizes any disruption to your established landscaping. While some projects may require the temporary relocation of certain elements, like carefully uprooting and replanting a tree upon project completion, we always explore all other options first. For your driveway, we implement protective measures such as laying down sturdy plywood across the surface to prevent any damage from our equipment. We’re committed to treating your property with respect throughout the construction process.
To ensure your pool is completed as efficiently as possible, our construction crews typically work during daylight hours. This means our start and end times may vary seasonally. During the late fall, winter, and early spring, we maximize the available sunlight. As the warmer late spring, summer, and early fall arrive, our crews often begin work early in the morning to take advantage of cooler temperatures and complete several productive hours before the heat becomes intense. Our standard workdays are Monday through Friday, with Saturday work as needed to maintain project timelines.
We also believe in being good neighbors. Before construction begins in earnest, your Project Manager will personally reach out to your immediate neighbors to inform them of the upcoming work, provide a general timeframe, and offer a direct point of contact for any questions or concerns regarding noise and activity. We’ve found this proactive communication helps ensure a smooth process for everyone.
To help us align your vision with your budget and create your ideal backyard, we recommend creating two lists: essential features and nice-to-have additions. The “must-haves” are non-negotiable, while the “nice-to-haves” can be considered if the budget allows. Check out our “What are My Pool and Spa Options?” FAQ section for inspiration!
Important Note: At Apricity Pools, we specialize in constructing high-quality in-ground pools and spas using shotcrete, (concrete which is sprayed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity to a surface) which is a durable and reliable material particularly well-suited for Arizona’s climate. If you’re interested in above-ground, vinyl, or other construction materials, we unfortunately won’t be the best fit for your pool project.
At Apricity Pools, the foundation of every pool and spa we build is a robust framework of steel #3 rebar. We meticulously interweave this rebar in a tight 6-inch by 6-inch grid throughout the excavated pool and spa shell. This dense steel reinforcement acts as the structural “skeleton,” providing exceptional stability and strength to the concrete that follows.
Next, we apply shotcrete. This isn’t your typical poured concrete; it’s a specialized concrete mixture that is sprayed through a high-pressure hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto the rebar-lined excavation. This application method ensures a dense, strong, and monolithic structure that conforms precisely to the desired shape of your pool and spa.
Crucially, before the shotcrete is applied, all necessary plumbing lines for features like drains, bubblers, and in-floor cleaners are strategically run within the excavated shell. Similarly, waterproof electrical conduits and housings for your pool lights are also installed at this stage. This proactive approach ensures seamless integration of all your desired features.
Once the shotcrete has concluded,we move on to the finishing touches. Structures, water features, coping, and the like. One of the final steps, and one most customers opt for is a pebble interior finish. This involves applying a mixture of small pebbles embedded in a durable matrix, which is then polished through acid washing to reveal a beautiful, textured surface that gives your pool and spa its desired color and a natural feel. However, we also offer the option of traditional tiles or a combination of pebble and tile finishes, allowing for complete customization of your pool and spa’s aesthetic.
HOA Considerations:
Many communities in the East Valley are governed by Homeowner’s Associations (HOAs). These associations may have specific rules and regulations regarding pools, spas, and other structures on your property, even if they are out of sight behind fences and gates. These requirements can sometimes be more stringent than city ordinances. While Apricity Pools is familiar with the regulations of many local HOAs, it is ultimately the homeowner’s responsibility to understand and obtain any necessary approvals from their HOA before construction begins. Apricity Pools will provide copies of your project plans to facilitate your submission to the HOA. Please note that the homeowner assumes all responsibility for understanding and complying with their HOA’s requirements.
Water features not only enhance the aesthetics of your pool and spa but also promote water circulation (reducing stagnant spots), help mask ambient noise, offer a playful or calming ambiance, and can even have a slight cooling effect. Additionally, they are a recognized way to increase your property’s value.
Pricing depends on design, quantities, size, materials, and features.
Providing relief from the Arizona sun, shade structures enhance comfort and extend the usability of your outdoor living space.
Extend your living space beyond the indoors with these popular options.
Price is determined by the square footage desired and varies based on design, materials, and features.
Landscape pricing is determined by design, materials, and features. Actual costs to be provided by bid and per contract.
Our General Residential Contractors license (ROC345456) allows us to go beyond just pools and spas. Unlike pool contractors with only a B-5 General Swimming Pool Contractor license (which Apricity Pools LLC also holds), we can design and build:
There is no project too big or small for Apricity Pools!
Because general contracting of structures pricing is dependent on many factors, we will provide specific pricing by bid.
Enhance the functionality and enjoyment of your pool with these options:
Pool Features:

Safety Equipment:
Essential for preventing accidents and ensuring compliance with local regulations.
Security Equipment:
Installation of low voltage Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems to provide added security and monitoring of your backyard structures and gate entrances. Please remember, this technology is a security enhancement and should never replace active adult supervision of children in and around the pool.
CCTV can utilize motion detection and alerts can be set notifying you by mobile phone, as an example of its effectiveness. Video captured can be downloaded and saved for later viewing through a data subscription service.
Spa (Hot Tub) Options:
Enhance relaxation and hydrotherapy with a spa.
While various hot tub brands and models exist, the primary structural types are:
Apricity Pools offers in-ground spas that can be attached to the pool, detached, raised above the pool level, or integrated at the same level. Most customers opt for a heater to control the spa’s water temperature. We can implement a plug-in spa if this is what is desired.
Spas can be designed for sitting, standing, or even swimming (a swim spa), which uses powerful jets to create a current for stationary swimming.
Technically, no. However, most people desire spa water temperatures around 100°F. While Arizona’s summer sun might warm a shallow body of water, it’s unlikely to consistently reach and maintain this temperature, especially as the sun sets or during cooler months. Therefore, a heater is highly recommended for achieving and maintaining your desired spa temperature when in use. Note: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that spa temperatures not exceed 104°F for health and safety reasons.
At Apricity Pools, our construction process is divided into five key phases:
Step One: The Design Phase – Duration: Typically 4-7 days from initial contact. We collaborate closely with you to understand your vision, taking detailed measurements, notes, and photographs of your property. Our designer then creates a scaled 3D rendering of your proposed pool, spa, and other features. We review this rendering with you and make any necessary revisions until you are completely satisfied with the final design.
Step Two: Contract Phase – Duration: Varies but as little as one day. We present you with a comprehensive scope of work in a detailed bid proposal and contract. During or before this phase, you will arrange financing. The contract is finalized once both parties have signed and you will provide an initial down payment.
Step Three: Permitting and Pre-Construction Phase – Duration: Varies but generally less than 2 weeks. Apricity Pools will handle the acquisition of all necessary permits and schedule the various contractors involved in the project, coordinating timelines to minimize disruption. We will also order all the required supplies and equipment. Your backyard will be precisely marked to indicate the exact location of the pool, spa, and other features.
Step Four: Construction Phase – Duration: 60-90 days. This is the phase where your vision comes to life! Our dedicated Project Manager will oversee all stages of construction, ensuring a well-coordinated process and keeping you informed of progress. We will also promptly address any unforeseen issues that may arise.
Step Five: Pool Education and Enjoying Your Pool! Duration: Approximately 1 hour for education. Once construction is complete, we provide you with thorough instruction on the operation of your pool and spa equipment, as well as guidance on the care and maintenance of the materials used. Then, all that’s left is for you to enjoy your new outdoor oasis!
While Step Five marks the formal end of the construction project, our relationship doesn’t have to end there. Apricity Pools offers ongoing pool and spa service plans to suit your needs. We also stand behind our workmanship and the quality of the equipment we install, and we are always available to address any questions or concerns you may have. We value our customers and welcome your feedback.
As specified in every contract, and per Arizona law (ARS 32-1158.01), we have established five (5) payments during a project lifecycle to ensure you see the value as the project progresses, while ensuring the project is completed in reasonable time.
Note that all changes will be reflected in a change order, with signatures, which is an addendum to the original contract. There will never be hidden costs, nor surprises in respect to payments – unless the surprise is to the customer’s benefit in a credit as a reduction!
In projects not including a pool or spa, a structured payment schedule will be drafted in similar payment segments.
Even if you handle the maintenance yourself, there are ongoing operating costs associated with pool and spa ownership. Most homeowners report spending approximately $100-$125 per month for utility costs and DIY maintenance. These costs primarily include electricity (for running the pump(s)), chemicals (chlorine, salt, algaecides, shock, pH balancers), and potentially gas (for heaters or gas-powered fire features). Larger pools generally have higher maintenance costs due to increased chemical and electricity needs.
Hiring a professional pool service typically ranges from $125 to $375 per month, depending on the pool size, services included (cleaning, chemical balancing, filter cleaning, etc.), and frequency of visits. In Arizona, pool closing and opening services are less common but might be relevant for those with multiple residences, costing between $300 and $550 per occurrence.
Repair costs can vary significantly, underscoring the importance of choosing a contractor who uses high-quality equipment from reputable suppliers with good warranties.
Like any significant investment, neglecting routine service and maintenance will lead to faster equipment depreciation and increased repair costs over time.
Your Guide to Pool & Spa Maintenance
The effort you invest in maintaining your pool and spa directly impacts its longevity, water quality, and your enjoyment. Here’s a general schedule for homeowners who prefer to handle their own DIY maintenance:
Twice Weekly: The Essentials
Weekly: Keeping Things Clean & Balanced
Monthly: Deeper Cleaning & Equipment Checks
Pump Priming Check: Ensure your pump is adequately primed (filled with water) before starting it. If the pump is making unusual noises or not circulating water properly, check the water level in the pump housing and add water if necessary before restarting.
What happens if you skip this? A dirty filter will significantly reduce its ability to remove debris, leading to cloudy water and increased strain on the pump. Calcium and oil buildup on surfaces can be difficult to remove if left untreated. A clogged pump basket can cause the pump to overheat and fail. Running a pump without proper priming can cause serious damage to the motor.
Quarterly (Every Three Months): Thorough Inspection
Filter O-Ring Check: Inspect the O-ring on the filter lid for proper sealing. Lubricate it with a silicone-based O-ring lubricant to maintain a tight seal. Replace the O-ring if it appears frayed, cracked, or loose.
What happens if you skip this? A damaged or unlubricated O-ring can prevent a proper seal on the filter, leading to leaks and reduced filtration efficiency. Neglecting to identify and address early signs of wear and tear on equipment can lead to more significant and costly repairs down the line.
Annually (Once a Year): Preventative Maintenance
What happens if you skip this? An old or worn filter cartridge will not effectively remove debris, leading to poor water quality and increased strain on other equipment. Neglecting annual equipment checks can lead to unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.
Appreciating the structural integrity of your pool and spa is crucial. Did you know that a typical full-sized pool can hold between 18,000 and 30,000 gallons of water? At 8.34 pounds per gallon, this translates to an immense pressure of 150,000 to 250,000 pounds pushing against the pool’s walls and floor.
Simultaneously, the surrounding earth exerts its own pressure, ranging from 80 to 140 pounds per cubic foot depending on soil type and moisture content. These powerful forces constantly work against your pool’s structure.
This is why proper engineering and the strength of the pool’s concrete, reinforced with steel (rebar), are paramount. Think of the rebar as the pool’s bones, providing the essential stability to withstand these natural forces, governed by physics.
Why do we exceed the minimum? We are committed to building pools and spas with the strongest possible “bones,” minimizing the potential for concrete cracks and weaknesses that can occur over time. We confidently guarantee your pool and spa against significant structural concrete cracks for as long as you own the property (this warranty is non-transferable to new owners).
Please note that unique property conditions, such as challenging soil compositions (identified through soil samples), properties on steep slopes or cliff edges, or other unusual site characteristics, may necessitate additional engineering and reinforcement measures, which will be clearly outlined in your project proposal.
